Drug Addiction Withdrawal

Drug Addiction WithdrawalEvery drug has its own particular drug addiction withdrawal symptoms. Most rehabilitation centers are equipped to deal with most, if not all, types of drug addiction withdrawal. The following is a list of commonly abused drugs, their drug addiction withdrawal symptoms.

  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Alcohol
The consequences of alcoholism are quite serious both in terms of damaged personal relationships and physical health, as heavy drinking can increase the risk for certain cancers including those of the liver, esophagus, throat, and larynx, and may also cause liver cirrhosis, immune system problems, brain damage and harm to the fetus during pregnancy.
Withdrawal Symptoms: Both a psychological and physical addiction, the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include, but are not limited to:
    • sweating or rapid pulse
    • hand tremor ("the shakes")
    • insomnia
    • nausea or vomiting
    • physical agitation, jumpiness
    • anxiety
    • transient visual, tactile or auditory hallucinations or illusions
    • grand mal seizures
    • loss of appetite
    • death
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Cocaine
Cocaine is an extremely addictive narcotic stimulant that provides the user with a short-lived feeling of euphoria, talkativeness and mental alertness. As such, cocaine addiction can occur rather quickly and be a very difficult habit to break.
Withdrawal Symptoms: Cocaine can lead to both a physical and a psychological addiction and requires a period of readjustment once the drug is no longer being taken. Withdrawal symptoms vary in length and severity depending on the length of use and the frequency. Symptoms include:
    • agitation
    • depression
    • intense cravings
    • extreme fatigue
    • anxiety
    • angry or violent outbursts
    • decreased motivation
    • nausea or vomiting
    • shaking
    • irritability
    • muscle pain
    • irregular or disturbed sleep patterns
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Ecstasy
A psychologically addictive drug because of the intense feeling of euphoria and heightened sensory stimulation that it produces, withdrawal symptoms include:
    • depression
    • anxiety
    • panic attacks
    • sleeplessness or insomnia
    • inter-personal withdrawal
    • paranoid delusions
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Heroin
The symptoms associated with withdrawal from heroin can begin anywhere from six to eight hours following the last ingestion, becoming most severe between forty-eight to seventy-two hours after the last usage. Symptoms may include:
    • dilated pupils
    • piloerection (goose bumps)
    • watery eyes
    • runny nose
    • yawning
    • loss of appetite
    • tremors
    • panic
    • chills
    • nausea
    • muscle cramps
    • insomnia
    • stomach cramps
    • diarrhea
    • vomiting
    • shaking
    • chills or profuse sweating
    • irritability
    • jitteriness
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Marijuana
A widely used drug throughout the United States and around the world, upwards of 150,000 individuals enter treatment for a proclaimed addiction to marijuana. Marijuana addiction is defined when the person makes a firm decision to stop smoking only to relapse following intense cravings for the drug.
Withdrawal Symptoms: The withdrawal symptoms from marijuana begin within twenty-four hours and can last up to a full month as the drug is flushed from the body. Symptoms include:
    • irritability
    • anxiety
    • physical tension
    • decreases in appetite and mood
    • short-term memory loss
    • irregular sleep patterns
    • loss of motivation
    • depression
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Meth
Although it can be prescribed for medical purposes such as the treatment of attention-deficit disorder, narcolepsy and obesity, such cases are rare and intended for short-term use only. Because of its powerful effects as a stimulant, methamphetamine is a very dangerous drug that can lead to violent behavior following the initial rush or high, and psychosis and paranoia over long term use.
Withdrawal Symptoms: Although there are three grades of meth addicts including low-intensity addiction, high-intensity addiction and binge addiction, the symptoms of meth withdrawal are the same for all. Some symptoms include:
    • fatigue or exhaustion
    • long, disturbed periods of sleep
    • irritability
    • intense hunger
    • moderate to severe depression
    • psychotic episodes
    • anxiety
    • insomnia
    • confused state
  • Drug Addiction Withdrawal: Prescription Drugs
One of the fastest growing trends in drug addiction, addiction to prescription drugs continues to be a problem throughout North America. The three most commonly abused groups of prescription drugs include prescription opioids (OxyContin, Vicodin, Dilaudid,), central nervous system (CNS) depressants (barbiturates and benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium, Librium, Mebaral and Halcion) and prescription stimulants (Ritalin).
Withdrawal Symptoms: Because the withdrawal symptoms of many prescription drug addictions are similar to their illegal counterparts, the type of symptoms depends on which group of drug is being abused.
    • Prescription opioids:
      • cold shakes
      • vomiting
      • diarrhea
      • insomnia
      • bone pains
    • CNS depressants:
      • confusion, racing thoughts
      • severe depression
      • seizures
      • possible death
      • Because of its potentially fatal withdrawal symptoms, withdrawal from barbiturates must be supervised by a medical doctor.
    • Prescription stimulants:
      • depression
      • anxiety
      • agitation
      • insomnia
      • nausea
      • abdominal cramps
      • exhaustion
